In northeast Oklahoma, a region of the state known as ‘Green Country’, at the foot of the Ozark Mountains, lies the second largest city in the state of Oklahoma, Tulsa. Situated on the banks of the Arkansas River, Tulsa is home to the most inland river port in the United States, the Tulsa Port of Catoosa, with access to international waterways and is part of the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System. As Tulsa enjoys a wetter climate then points further west, an uncharacteristically lush eco region of a relatively larger number of lakes and hills surround the area than in the other more prairie like climates of central and western Oklahoma.
The Lochapoka Band of Creek Native American Tribe settled Tulsa between the years of 1828 and 1836. Their home was originally established under the Creek Council Oak Tree, naming their new settlement ‘Tallasi”, which means “Old Town” in the Creek language, and later becoming called ‘Tulsa’.
With Tulsa’s first oil well in 1901, the ‘Sue Bland Number 1’, discovering discovery and implementation of the large Glenn Pool Oil Fields came into the history books and the city that soon came to be known as the “Oil Capital of the World” was well on its path to successful development and growth. By 1909, the population of Tulsa had swelled to over 180,000. With the city successes came development and the building boom created some notable Art Deco homes and buildings, many still exist with historical landmark designations. A larger base of contemporary architectural styles came to the city with the building booms of the 1970s and 80s, culminating in the BOK Tower, the Cityplex Tower and a significantly important postmodern futuristic complex of buildings at the Oral Roberts University.
Tulsans enjoy full time opera and ballet companies, and two world-renowned art museums in their city with one of the nations largest concentrations of Art Deco architecture. Forbes, Partners for Livable Communities and Relocate America have all called Tulsa one of America’s most livable large cities, and in 2012 BusinessWeek ranked Tulsa among the top 50 best cities in the United States.
