Find Homes for Sale in Malibu!

The name Malibu, which conjures up images the world over of movie stars and luminaries from television and the recording arts enjoying their spectacular beach homes to the sound of the pounding Pacific surf, started as an area belonging to the Chumash–a thriving Native American tribe whose reach extended from the San Joaquin Valley to San Luis Obispo to Malibu and the Channel Islands. The name, originally ‘Humaliwo’ means ‘the surf sounds loudly’. From that, the area of Malibu evolved into a 13,000 acre land grant that eventually fell into the hands of land speculator Frederic Hastings Rindge in 1891. The state won a court dispute with the Rindge Family and built what is now known as the Pacific Coast Highway in 1929. The original Rindge Family home, now known as the Adamson House still exists and is on the view as a California Historical Landmark which is part of the Malibu Creek State Park and is located between Malibu Lagoon State Beach and Surfrider Beach, near the famed Malibu Pier.

Malibu has 21 miles of spectacular beaches, with much of that coastline visible from the Pacific Coast Highway. There are several notable public beaches, among them are Topanga State Beach, Malibu Lagoon State Beach, Malibu Surfrider Beach, Dan Blocker Beach, the Point Dume State Beach, Zuma Beach, LaPiedra Beach, El Pescador and El Matador –part of the Robert H Myers State Beaches, and Nicholas Canyon Beach. Malibu also has a number of scenic Parks to enjoy hiking, trail riding and other recreational activities and these parks include the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, Malibu Creek State Park, Point Mugu State Park, and the Leo Carillo State Beach and Park.

There are also several scenic and highly sought after neighborhoods and enclaves with spectacular homes either along some of the picturesque beaches or high on canyon hillside spots taking advantage of some of the spectacular views of the Pacific in Malibu. The most well-known of these beach enclaves is the Malibu Colony, a private gated community home to movie stars, studio chiefs, recording stars and captains of industry. Malibu Colony is located south of Malibu Road and the Pacific Coast Highway, west of Malibu Lagoon State Beach and east of Malibu Bluffs Park. Known as “the original Malibu”, the Malibu Colony was one of the first communites established when May Rindge started leasing and selling lots to chosen movie star friends of hers, and that’s when it started becoming known as the exclusive “Malibu Beach Motion Picture Colony”. Now residents such as Sting, Robert Redford, Leonardo DiCaprio, the producer Brian Grazer, John McEnroe, Tom Hanks, Bill Murray, Bette Midler, Mel Gibson and Mel Brooks enjoy privacy that the renowned guard gated enclave provides.

Just south, and closer to Los Angeles, is Malibu’s Carbon Beach. Carbon Beach, also known as “Billionaire’s Beach”, due to Larry Ellison and David Geffen among others building and owning expensive homes on several lots each along its crescent shaped sandy beach so sought-after due to it’s privacy. Also calling Carbon Beach home is Jennifer Aniston, Jeffrey Katzenberg and Courtney Cox. One of the homes on Carbon Beach sold for $40 million last year, Registering it as one of the highest sales in Los Angeles County. Currently Coldwell Banker has a listing for three quarters of an acre beachfront home with a beachside tennis court, large pool and 137 feet of beach frontage listed for 57.5 million.

Malibu’s La Costa Beach area was one of the first areas to be developed along the Pacific Coast Highway. Homes there on the beach range from the high 6 million into the double digits. Homes on the hillside, in addition to breathtaking views of the Pacific, include a membership to the popular La Costa Beach Club, much sought after for families, swimmers, beach goers and tennis players that enjoy gathering at it’s scenic Beach Club facility.

Another private exclusive area is the Malibu Cove Colony. Malibu Cove Colony has an intensely beautiful beach and striking contemporary homes, accessible by Malibu Cove Colony Drive, a gated tree lined street. The beach there connects to Latigo Shores’ alluring tide pools and Escondido Beach’s deep sands which leads to Paradise Cove and Point Dume popular for long beautiful walks along the sand. For surfers, Latigo Shores has an excellent surf break out past the pleasant mix of charming beach cottages and modern architectural homes to luxury multi family condominiums.

The best kept secret beach is accessed by Sea Level Drive. Sea Level Drive has two sections: East Sea Level Drive which is a quaint little start along the beach, with gardens that stretch along the beach side of the road, and walkways between the homes in the beach, giving it a very community like feel. West Sea Level Drive leads to the beach, and forks off from the western portion Broad Beach Road, ending up in one of Malibu’s most beautiful beaches. El Matidor Beach also is a spectacularly beautiful beach with eroded sand stone pillars called ‘Sea Stacks’ , large rocks and stunning sea caves to explore. El Matador beach also attracts sea lions and pelicans.

Just further north along Pacific Coast Highway lies one of the most exclusive and sought after of all of Malibu’s beach communities, Broad Beach. Here there are larger lots with a wider beach along it’s 1.1 mile stretch. The nearly hundred beachfront homes are all extraordinary homes, with only just a few remaining undeveloped lots on the beach available. Among the celebrities that have homes in Broad Beach are, Pierce Brosnan, Danny DeVito, Robert De Niro, Eddie Van Halen, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, Dustin Hoffman, Steven Spielberg and Sylvester Stallone, among many others. Currently there are homes for sale in Malibu on Broad Beach for 35 million, 31.5 million, 24 million, and 15.9 million.

In addition to the fabulous beach enclaves and communities of Malibu are some world-class restaurants such as Nobu, Malibu Seafood Restaurant, Dukes Malibu, Geoffrey’s, Moonshadows, The Reel Inn, Neptune’s Net, Mastro’s Ocean Club, Tra di Noi, Carbon Beach Club Restaurant, Taverna Tony, Malibu Pier Restaurant, Gravina, Malibu Farms Restaurant, Malibu Beach Inn and Mr. Chow.

For retail shops, Malibu also has the Malibu Country Mart encompassing 6 acres in the heart of Malibu Civic Center, and comprises approximately 90,000 square feet of high-end retail, dining and service providers, with a park and children’s playground. Included in the shops in the Malibu Country Mart are Ralph Lauren, Ron Herman, Planet Blue, John Varvatos, Chrome Hearts, Oliver Peoples, MAC Cosmetics, Calypso St. Barth, L’Occitane, Madison, and James Perse.

Pepperdine University, Malibu High School and the Malibu Pier are right nearby.
